Appendice
“There is only one thing that I would never cut out, although it is feasible medically speaking: my tongue. But I don’t want. Because without my tongue I can no longer do theatre, I lose my citizenship as well as my war against the enemy.”
Excerpt from Appendice, a performance by Lina Saneh

Performance duo-in monologue- explores limits of law and partnership
Beirut: In the intimate confines of the cul-de-sac at the far end of Galerie Sfeir-Semler, the audience enters to find actress and playwright Lina Saneh sitting on a chair facing a lectern. She sits, motionless, hands on her lap, her eyes averted from both lectern and audience.
Actor Rabih Mroué enters with a stack of papers and stands behind the lectern with the manner of a man about to deliver a lecture or eulogy. “I have a problem,” he declares. “A big problem”.
So begins Saneh’s new play “Appendice” […]
Mroué is speaking on behalf of his wife – a relationship that reproduces the power dynamics and legal status of women in many religions.
It also turns this dynamic on its head. This being Saneh’s play the audience is aware that it’s the wife who’s mostly responsible for the words the husband speaks. At several points in the performance, Mroué’s character seems to depart from his wife’s script to speak for himself, underlining the mundane marital symptoms of the existential issues Saneh wants to discuss.
